Burton’s pre-season started with a one-nil defeat to Ilkeston on Tuesday, so far from ideal, but it is the minutes on the pitch that are the main thing.

For the trialists at the club it gave them a chance to catch Gary Rowett’s eye with a few on show during that game, the most ‘high profile’ so to speak being the previously ‘unnamed Dutch trialist’ Thomas Verheydt.

Rowett knows he is still raw in some areas, and will have to improve, but he does think that the 22-year-old has ‘a little bit of everything’ to his games and he has been ‘quite pleased’ with what he has seen so he will continue to train with the Brewers and feature against Sheffield United on Saturday.

The boss told the Burton Mail: ‘Out of the triallists, Thomas is the main one we’ve got in to have a look at.

‘We’ll have another look throughout the week and then on Saturday, and make an assessment from there.

‘He’s a big powerful boy and if he was a bit fitter and a bit more up to speed with what the other players were doing and how we want to play, then maybe we’d see a different player but technically, with balls into his feet he linked quite well and he had a chance with his head which he perhaps should have done better with.

‘But I think he’s got a little bit of everything, so I was quite pleased with him.’

If he was fully fit, with this lacking at the moment, Rowett is optimistic he can bring something to the club he is not so sure about the other trialist former Norwich City youngster Louis Cutajar, a left back, and 27-year-old ‘keeper Joe Anyon….
