Tom Flanagan will be missing for the remainder of this month, and some of February too, due to an injury, which opened the door to Shane Cansdell-Sherriff to make his return to the Burton first-team recently.

After an appendix operation the Brewers will be missing Flanagan for the next five or six-weeks, meaning the partnership he and John Mousinho had formed has been broken up.

Obviously Nigel Clough was disappointed, but he told the Official Website he’ll get a chance when fit again but in the meantime doesn’t have any issue with Cansdell-Sherriff filling in.

‘Tom felt rough on Wednesday and Thursday and they called him in and he had his appendix out on Friday. It’s a shame as he was playing so well but Shane stepped back in and was magnificent. Tom will get another chance to get back in when he’s fit in four to six weeks.’

Flanagan will return next month but Remi Matthews has now returned to his parent club at the end of his loan spell.

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink brought him in on a deal that ran until early January with Clough deciding not to extend his loan so he’s now return to Norwich after making just six first-team appearances.

With Jon McLaughlin very much the no.1, which isn’t likely to change, but Matthews wanting first-team football Clough added, also on the Official Website, he’s gone back to his Premier League club in the hopes of finding a club where that’ll happen.

‘Remi will be going back, he wants to play football. He came to challenge in the first team but he understands that Jon McLaughlin has been in such good form. Remi will go back to try and find another club. He’s been brilliant since he’s been here and it’s been good to have him around.’

Marcus Harness has returned to Burton recently too at the end of his loan spell with Aldershot.
