A hat-trick of upsets was beyond Burton as our league cup run ended, with a run of defeats continuing.

Burton were hoping for another upset on Wednesday night but championship outfit Brighton & Hove Albion proved too strong as they knocked us out with a 3-0 win at the Pirelli Stadium.

Perhaps things would have been different had Brighton defender Lewis Dunk not cleared Dominic Knowles’ effort off the line, just minutes later Rohan Ince (18) headed the visitors into the lead.

We had to get through to half time just one-down to have much of a chance but when Kazenga LuaLua (37) drove home from 20-yards just before the break it was likely to be a bridge too far.

For a third successive game we conceded three-goals when Craig Mackail-Smith (66) added another at the midway point of the second half to secure the three-nil win.

Brighton did end with 10-men when they had captain Inigo Calderon sent off for a wild challenge on Robbie Weir.
